Trump accused of illegally influencing 2016 election

Donald Trump sought to illegally influence the 2016 presidential election by seeking the release of damaging information about his personal life, a prosecutor told jurors at the start of the former president’s corruption trial.

"This was a long-planned and wide-ranging conspiracy to influence the 2016 election in a way that would help Donald Trump win by making illegal hush-money payments to silence people who had damaging information about his conduct," prosecutor Matthew Colangelo said Monday. "This is election fraud, plain and simple," he said.

A defense lawyer disputed the charges, calling the case baseless and attacking the credibility of Trump's former fixer, who is the government's star witness.

"President Trump is innocent. President Trump did nothing wrong. The government should never have brought this case," attorney Todd Blanche said.

The opening statements offered starkly different views of a case that will play out against a backdrop of a heated presidential election campaign in which Trump is not only the presumptive Republican nominee but a defendant facing the possibility of conviction and prison time.

It's the first trial of a former president and the first of four trials scheduled to start with jury selection.

Against that backdrop, prosecutors sought from the outset to underscore the seriousness of the case, which they said was, at its core, about interference in an election, stemming from hush-money payments to a porn actress who said she had a sexual encounter with Trump.
