While hundreds of opponents, activists and ordinary Russians have been detained for expressing their disagreement with Russia's attack on Ukraine, this was the first case of someone being convicted for answering journalists' questions.

Yuri Kokhovets was found guilty by a Moscow court of "discrediting the army" and sentenced to five years in prison, the independent outlets SOTAVision and Mediazona and the NGO OVD-Info reported.

Kokhovets had spontaneously responded in July 2022 to a request for comment by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) to passers-by on the streets of Moscow and openly criticised the Russian leadership and the invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking outside a metro station, he said the Russian president and government were "bandits" responsible for the conflict, and he challenged the Kremlin's stated reasons for the invasion.

He also accused the Russian military of having "wantonly shot" civilians in Bucha, a town near Kyiv that was the site of a massacre blamed on Moscow's troops early in the Russian offensive in 2022.
