The drill involving "super-large multiple rocket launchers" took place on Monday, with Kim "praising the accuracy and the rate of fire" of the missiles, which "hit the target" 352 kilometres away, the North's state news agency said.

South Korea's military said Monday that the North had fired a volley of short-range ballistic missiles, a launch that was also confirmed by Japan.

According to Seoul, the missiles were fired from the Pyongyang area and flew about 300 kilometres before landing in waters east of the Korean peninsula.

The launch is the North's second in less than a week, after it tested a "super-large warhead" designed for a strategic cruise missile on Friday, also according to KCNA.

Pyongyang also test-fired "a new type of anti-aircraft missile Pyoljji-1-2 into the western sea", also known as the Yellow Sea, on Friday, it added.

Both tests were part of "regular activities of the defence scientific research institutes aimed at further beefing up the country's defence capabilities," KCNA said, stressing that the tests "have nothing to do with the current situation".

South Korea's military said at the time it had detected the launches of cruise missiles.

The launches come after the UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution to extend a monitoring system for sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear programme, due to a veto by Russia.

In early April, Pyongyang said it had tested a new medium- to long-range solid-fuel hypersonic missile. State media at the time released a video of the launch, which was overseen by the North Korean leader.

North Korea continues to develop its weapons programmes, including its nuclear arsenal, in defiance of international sanctions.

Since the start of the year, the country has declared the South its "main enemy", closed liaison offices set up for inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation, and threatened to enter a state of war over any violation of its territory.
