Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Turkey on Monday in a bid to improve relations between the two countries, which have been strained by differences with Turkish leader Tayyip Erdogan.

It was Steinmeier's first visit to the country since he became German president in 2017, and it featured an unexpected highlight.

The German ambassador to Turkey hosted a diplomatic dinner at his residence, and the menu included kebabs - so the German leader decided to get hands-on and help make them.

Guided by Berlin kebab chef Arif Keles, the head of state helped slice the meat in true kebab-chef style.

The moment was captured in amusing pictures, showing Steinmeier in a position not usually associated with heads of state, let alone German ones. You can see the pictures above.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier is spending three days in Turkey, having started his trip in Istanbul. He is due to meet Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday.
