The funding will be used to supply "rapidly" ammunition, air defence, 'drones' and engineering support, the Government said in a statement.

Separately, the UK's Ministry of Defence is sending equipment "to help push back the Russian invasion on land, sea and air", including 60 armoured vehicles, more than 1,600 anti-tank and anti-air missiles, more than 400 drones and around four million rounds of small arms ammunition.

"Defending Ukraine against Russia's brutal aggression is vital for our security and for the whole of Europe. If [President Vladimir] Putin is allowed to succeed in this war of aggression, it will not stop at Ukraine's borders," Sunak warned.

The additional £500 million of funding announced today brings the UK's military aid to Ukraine this year to £3 billion (€3.5 billion).

The trip to Poland and Germany is intended to strengthen diplomatic, trade and security ties and discuss the threat from Russia, with meetings in Warsaw today with Polish prime minister Donald Tusk and NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg.

Sunak will then travel to Berlin, where he will meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday.
