"We attacked Sderot and Niram -- located on the outskirts of Sderot -- with a barrage of projectiles in response to the crimes of the Zionist enemy against our people," said an official from the armed wing of Hamas, quoted by the Palestinian newspaper Filastin, also linked to the Islamist group.

Sderot authorities indicated that four of the five projectiles fired from Gaza were intercepted, while a fifth hit a warehouse, causing a fire but no casualties, reported the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

In turn, the Israeli army said it had bombed "two launch positions used by Hamas in southern Gaza" in the last few hours and added that during the last day it "attacked and destroyed dozens of terrorist targets" in the Palestinian enclave.

According to the army in a statement published on its website, the targets to be bombed include "military buildings, observation posts, terrorists, launch positions and other military infrastructure", as part of the offensive against Gaza that aims to retaliate against the attacks carried out on 7 October by Hamas, which left almost 1,200 dead and about 240 hostages.

The Gaza authorities, controlled by the Palestinian Islamist group, today raised the number of dead in the war to about 34,200, to which are added more than 480 Palestinians killed at the hands of Israeli forces and in attacks by settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
