In a statement, the Greens called on EP President Roberta Metsola to "speed up the parliamentary investigation into the links between MEPs and foreign powers", following the disclosure of yet another suspicion of espionage for China, which led to the arrest today in Germany of an assistant to far-right Alternative for Germany MEP and Spitzenkandidat Maximilan Krah.
One of the Greens' candidates for President of the European Commission, Terry Reintke, said in a statement that the internal investigation should be accelerated so that the preliminary findings can be released before the elections from 6 to 9 June.
"Autocracies such as China and Russia are actively trying to undermine our democracies in Europe," she stressed, adding that there must be consequences for those who attack the democratic integrity of the European Union.
This is the third scandal involving external interference in the EP, after Qatargate (in December 2022), which resulted in the arrest and dismissal of a vice-president of the institution.
In April, the Belgian authorities announced an investigation into alleged Russian influence and interference with MEPs, in an investigation initiated by the Czech Republic.
