"It is regrettable to see the European Union quickly decide to impose more illegal restrictions on Iran, simply because the country exercised its right to self-defense against the irresponsible aggression of Israel," Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a message on his social media account. "The EU should not follow Washington's advice to appease the criminal Israeli regime," the minister said. On Monday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the European Union had agreed to extend existing sanctions on Iran over drones to cover missiles and their possible transfer to Tehran's regional allies or to Russia. Borrell's remarks came nearly 10 days after Iran launched its first direct drone and missile attack on Israeli territory. The attack came after an April 1 airstrike attributed to Israel destroyed an Iranian consular annex in Damascus and killed seven members of the Islamic republic's ideological army, the Revolutionary Guard, including two generals. The Israeli military said the vast majority of the more than 300 missiles and drones fired by Iran on April 13-14 were intercepted -- with the help of the United States and other allies -- and that the attack caused only minimal damage.
