"These are Storm Shadow (missiles) and other types of missiles, hundreds of armored and amphibious vehicles, and ammunition - everything that Ukraine really needs on the battlefield," Zelensky wrote on social media, reporting on a phone conversation with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Ukraine received its first batch of long-range Storm Shadow missiles from the UK last spring, which Kyiv has used to strike Russian targets far behind the front lines. The Ukrainian president thanked Sunak for the decision to send the military equipment and for the UK's cooperation in joint defense production, in particular, he said, in developing Ukraine's long-range armament and naval capabilities. Zelensky also discussed with the British prime minister "the need to create a mechanism for the seizure of Russian assets" in the UK. Sunak is beginning a visit to Poland and Germany today, which coincides with the announcement of the additional £500 million (€580 million) military support package for Ukraine. The funding will be used to provide "rapidly" deployable ammunition, anti-air defense, drones and engineering support, the government said in a statement. Separately, the UK Ministry of Defense will send equipment "to help push back the Russian invasion on land, sea and air," including 60 armored patrol vehicles, more than 1,600 anti-tank and anti-air missiles, more than 400 drones and about four million rounds of small arms ammunition. "Defending Ukraine against Russia's brutal aggression is not just the right thing to do, it is in our own interests and the interests of all of Europe. If we allow [President Vladimir] Putin to succeed in this war of aggression, it will not stop at Ukraine's borders," Sunak warned. Today's additional £500 million brings the UK's military aid to Ukraine this year to £3 billion (€3.5 billion). The new UK aid package comes after the US House of Representatives on Saturday approved a new $60 billion (€57 billion) package to fund more weapons shipments to Ukraine, after months of delays. The US Congress also approved legislation allowing the targeting of Russian assets.
