Israel sets up camp with 500 tents in Khan Yunis

A camp with 500 white canvas tents has been set up in Khan Yunis, in the south of Gaza, and a second is under construction, in an action that the inhabitants of the enclave believe is linked to the announced Israeli ground invasion of Rafah.

A Palestinian source confirmed to the Spanish news agency EFE that the camp was set up west of Khan Yunis, "near a cemetery," while a second, similar complex is being built nearby.

The Israeli army has not responded or indicated the purpose of these camps, which EFE was also unable to confirm with official Israeli sources.

According to the Palestinian source, the camp is intended to house the displaced who are crowded into the European Hospital in this southern city, which was devastated by Israeli attacks during an offensive that lasted more than four months and destroyed neighborhoods and medical facilities.

But the inhabitants of Gaza believe that if more tents are set up after the displaced population is transferred, it could constitute preparation for a forced evacuation of Rafah, where more than a million people are sheltered and, according to Israel, four Hamas battalions remain.

After six and a half months of war, the Gaza Strip, with a population of about 2.3 million people spread over just 365 square kilometers, has suffered unprecedented destruction.

The last stronghold where Israeli troops have not entered by land is Rafah, which, however, suffers daily lethal bombardments, also against civilian homes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted for two months on invading Rafah, despite the rejection of the international community, arguing that if he does not, he will not achieve "absolute victory" over Hamas and that Gaza will not cease to constitute a "threat" to Israel.

According to the local newspaper Times of Israel, on the 8th of this month the Israeli Ministry of Defense launched a tender for the supply of 40,000 tents, with a capacity for about 500,000 people.

On the same day, Netanyahu announced that he had "a date" planned for the ground invasion, which he has not yet revealed and of which the United States said it had no knowledge.
