The president of Russia’s Chechnya Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, shared a video of himself exercising on Tuesday, a day after a Russian media outlet reported that the Chechen leader was seriously ill.

"A busy day ended with sports and positive," he wrote in a social media post accompanying the video, which you can see in the gallery above.

"Remember, taking care of your health is an investment in your future," he added.

On Monday, the independent Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe published a medical report that said Kadyrov was diagnosed with pancreatic necrosis, a condition that causes the death of pancreatic tissue, in 2019.

The outlet reported that Kadyrov’s worsening health condition has prompted the Kremlin to start looking for a successor to maintain stability in the Chechnya region.

In September, Novaya Gazeta Europe reported that the Chechen leader was placed in a medically induced coma after an overdose of sedatives. The outlet cited anonymous sources at a Moscow hospital where Kadyrov was allegedly being treated.

It is worth noting that Kadyrov, who rules Chechnya with an iron fist, is considered a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has a paramilitary force known as the “kadyrovtsy.” At the start of the Russian offensive, images circulated on social media of a square in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, filled with soldiers allegedly on their way to Ukraine. Forces under Kadyrov’s command have been accused of committing human rights abuses in Chechnya.

On February 26, 2022, the Chechen leader confirmed that troops from the republic were taking part in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
