The mother of Jade Young, one of the victims of the fatal stabbing attack at Sydney's Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre on April 13, said her family's lives had been "fractured forever" as she called for political leaders to address "the gaps in mental health care".
Speaking at her daughter's funeral on Tuesday, Elizabeth remembered her "beautiful, loving, kind-hearted, hard-working daughter" who was killed while buying a birthday present for a child.
"My nine-year-old granddaughter was skipping alongside her … and then at 3.20pm Jade Young was attacked and killed in front of her daughter," the woman said, according to Australian broadcaster 9News.
"Our lives have been fractured, there is no going back to normal," she added.
The woman used her address to call for change. "I never want to read the word tragic or tragedy associated with the perpetrator of my daughter's murder again," she said. "He was calculated, he was deliberate, he was a murderer who was able to walk past Westfield security, making a shopping centre the most dangerous place in the world for Jade."
She called on "federal and state politicians to address the gaps in mental health care so that we can make this a safer world for our girls and for all Australians".
The attacker, Mert Ney, killed six people – Jade Young, Yuxin Cheng, Jieun Baek, Pikria Darchia, Farhad Jamshidnia , and Ashlee Blackwell – and injured 12 others before he was shot dead by police. Five of those people remain in hospital.
Ney, 30, had a history of mental illness, which police say has ruled out terrorism as a motive. Police believe he may have specifically targeted women.
