The value represents an evolution when compared to the previous period, when assets estimated at 1,149 million meticais (almost 17 million euros) were recovered, according to a document in which a balance is made of the work of the Mozambican Public Prosecutor's Office in the last 12 months, to which Lusa had access today.
In total, during the period in question, the Mozambican Public Prosecutor's Office processed a total of 84 property and financial investigation proceedings, with at least 25 having been concluded, according to the Attorney General's Office.
Among the seized assets, 30 properties and 48 vehicles stand out, in addition to an amount of around 214 million meticais (three million euros), the document adds.
The Public Prosecutor's Office points to the lack of human resources as one of the main challenges in the work of the Central Asset Recovery Office.
"Despite the law providing that the Central Asset Recovery Office includes employees from different institutions (...), not all of them are assigned on an exclusive basis", the document reads.
The Central Asset Recovery Office in Mozambique is a multi-sector body subordinate to the Public Prosecutor's Office, with responsibilities for investigating, tracking, seizing and recovering assets.
The body was approved by the Government in February 2022, although it had been demanded for years by the Public Prosecutor's Office and other entities fighting corruption.
