Iraqi military dismisses sabotage theory in militia base blast
The Iraqi army concluded today that the explosion that killed one person three days ago at a military base of the pro-government militia group Popular Mobilization was not an attack, but rather a detonation in a munitions and rockets depot.

According to a statement from the military, the investigation determined that the explosion at the Kalsu base in Iraq's Babylon province occurred at 12:40 a.m. local time on Saturday (10:40 p.m. Friday in Lisbon), when a weapons and ammunition depot exploded, causing several fires and leaving a large crater at the site.
The Iraqi military then reported that the accident caused the death of a member of the Popular Mobilization Forces - a group of mostly pro-Iranian militias, but which is de facto integrated into the ranks of the army - and injuries to eight people, including a soldier.
Iraqi media initially claimed that the explosion was caused by an airstrike, at a time of heightened tension in the Middle East due to the crossfire between Iran and Israel.
In addition, several prominent militias of the Popular Mobilization Forces are also part of the so-called Iraqi Islamic Resistance, an amalgam of armed groups that have launched about 200 attacks against US military targets in Iraqi and Syrian territory since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip, in October 2023.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) denied carrying out airstrikes in Iraq that day, while the Iraqi military report stated that "there was no movement of fighter jets or 'drones' [unmanned aircraft] in the entire airspace in the province of Babylon before, during and after the moment of the explosion".
Amid the confusion following the explosion, an unidentified armed group attacked the following day, from Iraq, a base of the US-led international anti-jihadist coalition in Syria.
