The source, cited by the news agency France-Presse (AFP), did not reveal the authorship of the attack.
United States forces have been the target of several attacks in the region since the war between Israel and Hamas began, in early October 2023, but most of them stopped in early February.
"Monday's attack targeted the al-Asad airbase" without causing any injuries or damage, said the US official on condition of anonymity, who did not specify the type of attack.
"This is the second attack against American forces since February 4," he added.
Another attack took place over the weekend, with rockets fired from northern Iraq against a US base in Syria responsible for combating jihadists from the Islamic State (IS) group.
Between early October and early February, US forces in Iraq and Syria were the target of more than 165 attacks, causing injuries but no deaths among US soldiers.
In late January, a drone attack on a base in Jordan killed three US soldiers, leading the Pentagon to carry out attacks against positions linked to Iran in the region. The attacks against US positions have since stopped.
Most of the attacks were claimed by the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq", a group of pro-Iranian militias whose leaders are linked to the Hezbollah Brigades.
