The UK leader said the decision, which will see spending rise by around £80bn a year by the end of the decade, represents the "biggest uplift" in UK defence spending in a generation and was needed in "an increasingly dangerous world, where actors like North Korea, Iran, Russia and China are becoming more assertive".
Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw, Mr Sunak said much of the cash will be used to replenish the UK armed forces' stockpiles of munitions and to make "radical reforms to the way the defence industry produces equipment".
"Today is a turning point for European security and this is a pivotal moment for UK defence," the Conservative politician said, adding that the defence investment will make the UK "more prosperous and more secure, stronger at home and stronger abroad".
A member of NATO, the UK spent 2.07% of GDP on defence last year, according to the alliance, making it the second largest contributor to the defence spending of NATO members behind the US.
Also speaking at the press conference, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the UK's increased military spending "will make a difference".
Mr Sunak was speaking during a trip to Poland, ahead of talks with Polish counterpart Donald Tusk to discuss co-operation between the allies in supporting Ukraine, which has been under attack by Russia since February 2022.
