The bill is "very mature" and awaits adjustments by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being sent to the National Congress, according to the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, in a speech to a Senate committee. The new law will allow airlines that already operate international flights in Brazil to make domestic stopovers in cities in the Amazon region. The aim is to increase the frequency of flights in the "least covered region" of Brazil and to help reduce airfares. During the parliamentary session, Minister Sabino and several senators complained about the high cost of domestic airfares, claiming that they often exceed 1,000 euros to connect Manaus to Brasília, on a flight of just under three hours. The Brazilian minister also said that, in order to boost tourism, the government is working on drawing up other laws, including one that will allow casinos to be opened in hotel complexes.
