Australian police on Wednesday arrested seven people in Sydney following a church stabbing last week. Police said the men posed an “unacceptable risk and threat” to the community and adhered to a “religiously motivated extremist ideology”.

Deputy police commissioner Dave Hudson said, as quoted by DW, that it was “likely” the group under investigation could have been planning an attack, but no specific target had been identified.

“Their behaviour, whilst under surveillance, led us to believe that if they were to commit an act, we would not be able to prevent it,” he said. “We believed, through the investigation, that an attack was likely to occur,” he added.

Police said all the men were under the age of 18. Five of those arrested were assisting police with their inquiries. The operation involved 400 police officers.

A 16-year-old boy was charged on Friday over the attack, which left Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, Father Isaac Royel and two worshippers with minor injuries during a live-streamed mass.

According to Australian media, the teenager allegedly made comments in Arabic referring to the Prophet Muhammad before the attack.

The stabbing sparked violent protests, with hundreds of people from the Assyrian Christian community demanding the alleged attacker be handed over to them. Dozens of police officers were injured during the protests, which led to six arrests, including a 17-year-old boy.

The director-general of Australia’s domestic spy agency, the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) said the number of minors under investigation by the agency has been increasing due to a number of factors, including content posted or shared on social media.
