"Thank you Potus [acronym for President of the United States] for your relentless work these past months on this aid package", Michel wrote on social media platform X.

The European leader underlined that the European Union (EU) and the United States "stand united in our commitment to support a free and independent Ukraine, integrated in the Euro-Atlantic community".

Biden signed today a military aid measure that includes assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, ensuring that a package of war material will be sent to Kyiv "in the next few hours".

The announcement by the White House (US presidency) marks the end of a long political impasse, with Republicans in Congress blocking military assistance to Ukraine due to disagreements with Democrats.

"We rose to the moment. We stood united. And we got it done. Now we need to act quickly", said Biden, when announcing the signing of the foreign aid measure at the White House.

The global package is valued at 95 billion dollars (around 90 billion euros) and includes, in addition to aid to Ukraine, support for Israel in the war against the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and in the defense of Taiwan, whose sovereignty is claimed by Beijing.

The largest slice of the global package, 61 billion dollars (around 57 billion euros), is earmarked for military and financial assistance to Ukraine to combat the Russian invasion.

The package includes the sending of ammunition, including air defense ammunition and large quantities of artillery ammunition, desired by Ukrainian forces, as well as armored vehicles and other weapons.

Also today, the EU disbursed the second installment, of 1.5 billion euros, within the framework of the Mechanism for Ukraine.

Ukraine has been counting on financial aid and weapons from Western allies since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022.

Kyiv's allies have also imposed sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy in an attempt to diminish Moscow's ability to finance the war effort in Ukraine.

Recent months have been marked by large-scale Russian air strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, while Kyiv's forces have targeted targets in Russian territory near the border and in the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed in 2014.

Now in its third year of war, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been facing a shortage of weapons and ammunition, despite repeated promises of aid from Western allies.
