The US State Department’s principal deputy spokesperson, Vedant Patel, said at a press conference that Washington takes these allegations “very seriously” and that it continues to press Israel for more information.

The Israel Defense Forces said the allegations are “completely unfounded,” saying that during the time its troops were in the health compound, they were examining bodies buried by the Palestinians “as part of efforts to locate hostages.”

Amnesty International’s director of research, advocacy and policy, Erika Guevara-Rosas, stressed on Monday that the discovery of these mass graves highlights the need for independent investigations.

“The harrowing discovery of these mass graves underscores the urgent need to grant immediate access to human rights investigators, including forensic experts, to the occupied Gaza Strip to ensure evidence is preserved and independent, impartial and transparent investigations are carried out, with a view to ensuring accountability,” she said in a statement.

In this regard, she asserted that in the face of “an almost complete absence of accountability” as well as “mounting evidence of war crimes in Gaza,” Israel “must comply with the decision of the International Court of Justice, granting immediate access to independent human rights investigators and ensuring that all evidence of violations is preserved.”
