The previous assessment pointed to nine deaths.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva regretted the case on social media, stating that it was "with sadness and concern" that he learned of the death of at least ten people in the fire at a hostel in Porto Alegre.
"The establishment welcomed people in vulnerable situations in the 'gaucho' capital. My solidarity to the families and friends who lost their loved ones", added Lula da Silva in a publication on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the Brazilian news portal G1, which cites information from the Porto Alegre city hall, there were 30 people in the space, with 16 of them being supported by public money.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but local authorities have reported that they have started an investigation.
