Firefighters reported Friday afternoon that the inn where at least 10 people died was operating irregularly, without a license or a fire protection plan.
The fire also left 11 injured in Porto Alegre, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. According to the local authority, the site received people in situations of social vulnerability and had 30 people staying at the time of the incident.
The causes of the fire remain unknown. Although Civil Defense indicates that, preliminarily, they are considering the hypothesis of arson, the Civil Police said that no evidence of a crime was found.
Apparently, the fire started in a room and a resident tried to put it out with a mattress, which hit a wooden wall and spread.
According to the firefighters, there are still missing people who may be inside the building.
