Pope Francis arrived in Venice, northern Italy, on Sunday for his first trip of the year. The visit comes after a series of health issues forced the pontiff to cancel engagements in recent months.

It is also the 87-year-old pope's first visit to the city since his election in 2013, and the first time a pontiff has been to the Venice Biennale art exhibition. His first stop was a women's prison on the Venetian island of Giudecca, where the Vatican has created its own pavilion at the art show this year.

The exhibition space, which female inmates helped to create, is entitled 'With Their Own Eyes' and features works by artists including Maurizio Cattelan, Claire Fontaine and Bintou Dembele, reflecting the pain and stigma the women experience inside and outside prison.

Pope asks for better prison conditions for human growth

Pope Francis considered it "fundamental" that the prison system offers prisoners "spaces for growth" during his visit to female inmates at the Venice women's prison.

The trip is the pope's first since a brief visit to France in September last year. In December, he was due to attend a climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates but pulled out with a bad cold, the Reuters news agency reported. In March, he cancelled his participation in the traditional Way of the Cross procession "in order to preserve his health".

He has further trips planned in Italy in the next three months, to Verona, Trieste and Bari. Then comes the longest foreign trip of his papacy, to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore from September 2-13.
