Seizure of assets? Russia will give an "asymmetrical", but "painful" "response"

Seizure of assets? Russia will give an "asymmetrical", but "painful" "response"

Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev commented Saturday on the possibility of the United States transferring seized Russian assets to Ukraine, warning that Moscow could respond by confiscating property and money from American citizens and investors.

In a post on Telegram, the senior Russian official said that Russia "will not be able to give a completely symmetrical response" to the US "outright robbery"

"The reason is clear - we do not have a significant amount of American state property, including money, US government rights and other assets. Therefore, the response can only be asymmetrical. It is not a fact that it will be less painful," he warned.

"We are talking about foreclosing, for example, by a court decision, on the property of individuals located in the jurisdiction of Russia (money, real estate and movable property in kind, property rights)," he explained, acknowledging that "this is a complex story, since these individuals usually acted as investors in the Russian economy."

"And we guaranteed them the inviolability of their private property rights. But the unexpected happened - their state declared a hybrid war on us. This must be responded to," he added.

Medvedev's warning comes days after the US House of Representatives approved a $61 billion (€57 billion) aid package for Ukraine to help it counter the Russian invasion. The legislative package also includes a provision for the potential transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine.

Late last year, the US presented a plan to the G7 to seize $300 billion (€270 billion) in Russian assets.

However, the transfer of these assets to Ukraine is far from a done deal due to what the West says are legal and geopolitical obstacles.
