Moscow on weekend claimed the capture of the village of Novobakhmutivka in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, as Kyiv’s forces await the arrival of crucial weapons from the United States.
On Monday, the Ukrainian military said it had “repelled 55 attacks” in several villages north and east of Novobakhmutivka. Among those settlements is Ocheretyne, where heavy fighting was reported on Sunday.
The villages lie north of the town of Avdiivka, which Russian troops seized in February. Moscow’s forces have since advanced further into the Donetsk region.
Further south, Ukraine said its troops were “continuing to restrain the enemy” in several locations west of the Russian-held city of Donetsk, including the town of Krasnohorivka.
Kyiv said Russian forces, “with the support of aircraft, tried 15 times to break through the defences” of Ukrainian troops.
Krasnohorivka is located about 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of Donetsk and has been a key stronghold for Kyiv.
The area has become more vulnerable since the fall of Marinka and Avdiivka, and fighting has been reported as intensifying in recent weeks.
The commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on Sunday that his men had withdrawn to new defensive positions further west in certain sectors.
Kyiv has also warned that Russia will try to secure battlefield victories by May 9, a holiday marking the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II.
