The accident comes as the country battles deadly torrential rains.

"The provisional death toll is 42. There are others still trapped in the mud that we are trying to retrieve," county governor Susan Kihika told AFP news agency.

The dam burst near the town of Mai-Mahiu in the Rift Valley, about 100km (60 miles) northwest of Nairobi, sweeping away homes and submerging roads which are now closed to traffic.

On Friday, the Kenyan government urged the public to be prepared for even more heavy rainfall and said that flooding had killed 76 people since March.

Kenya and much of East Africa have been experiencing unusually heavy seasonal rains for several weeks, linked to the El Niño climate phenomenon.

In 2018, in the same Nakuru county where Mai-Mahiu is located, the collapse of the Solai dam, blamed on heavy rains and flooding, killed 48 people.
