PP accuses Sánchez of "ridiculous" theatre and of "enjoying" himself at the expense of the Spanish people

"Spain does not have a president [of the Government] who is up to the task", said Alberto Núñez Feijóo, after accusing the socialist Pedro Sánchez of being "ridiculous" and of having dragged Spain into this situation with "a play" in recent days.
"There is an indignant Spain" and "they have been making fun of a nation of 48 million Spaniards", said the leader of the Popular Party (PP, right), the largest party in the Spanish parliament today. Feijóo, who was speaking to journalists in Madrid, considered that Sánchez's threat to resign - who today said that, after five days of reflection, he will continue to lead the Government - was "pure electoral strategy, pure judicial strategy or both", on the eve of two elections (regional in Catalonia and European) and when there are suspicions of corruption that affect "his party, his government and people close" to the prime minister. For the PP leader, Sánchez "condemned the country to days of international shame and national uncertainty" and "preferred to run away instead of resigning", regretting that he did not call elections. "He ordered the people to reflect but did not give them the floor", said Feijóo, referring to Sánchez's appeal today for a collective reflection on the political debate in Spain. For the PP leader, Sánchez today made "the most dangerous" of speeches because it was "a confession that he does not accept discrepancies", that he does not want the control of the opposition or the media and for having questioned the actions of the justice system and the rule of law. "Whoever threatens Spanish democracy is the one who intends to impose on it a pure project of power without limits so as not to give explanations", he said. Feijóo considered that despite having decided to remain in power, Sánchez and the current Spanish government are in "agony" and explained that he will not go ahead with a motion of censure because the socialist "bought the support" of the parliamentary partners "with the dignity of the Spaniards", in a reference to the agreements with pro-independence parties. "He chose the most unworthy path and what he sought was polarization, victimization and not giving explanations", said Feijóo. Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox, the far-right party that is the third largest party in the Spanish parliament, also accused Sánchez of seeking to "guarantee impunity" and "total silence from the media" and of being an "apprentice tyrant". Pedro Sánchez announced today that he will continue to lead the country's Government after revealing that he was considering resigning last Wednesday, the day that a Madrid court confirmed the opening of a "preliminary investigation" for alleged influence peddling and corruption of his wife, Begoña Gomez, following a complaint from an organization with far-right connotations based on allegations and articles published on Internet pages and digital media. The Public Prosecutor's Office asked the following day to shelve the complaint, considering that there was no evidence of a crime that would justify the opening of a criminal proceeding. The leader of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) and the Government of Madrid reiterated today that he and his family have been victims for years of "harassment" and a "smear campaign" by his political opponents, based on rumors and lies that are taken to the political debate, and appealed for collective reflection on the "degradation of public life" in Spain and for social mobilization "for dignity" and against "the politics of shame". "For too long we have been allowing the mud to colonize political and public life with impunity, contaminating us with toxic practices", he said.
