A British tourist who was mauled by a shark while swimming off a Caribbean island on Friday was saved by friends who fought off the animal in the water.
Peter Smith, 64, from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was attacked by a bull shark about 10 metres from the shore near the Starfish Hotel in Great Courland Bay on the north coast of Tobago.
In a statement issued to the BBC on Monday, the victim's wife, Jo Smith, said Peter was "conscious and able to communicate", although he has serious injuries and is in intensive care in Scarborough General Hospital, Tobago, heavily sedated.
The pensioner suffered damage to his left arm and leg, abdomen and crush injuries to his right hand, the full extent of which is still being assessed.
Jo said her husband was only saved because "two friends stayed in the water to fight off the shark" and she thanked them.
The couple were on holiday on the island with friends and were due to fly home on the day of the attack. The Foreign Office said it was supporting the family.
Several beaches and coastal areas were closed in the wake of the attack and a reward was offered for the capture of the animal, although this was later withdrawn.
