“We believe that [the Court] is not competent” in this matter, Karine Jean-Pierre added.

On Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu asked US President Joe Biden for help in preventing the issuing of those arrest warrants, according to the Axios news site.

The warrants could target Netanyahu himself, as well as the defence minister and the chief of staff.

On 26 April, Netanyahu wrote on social media that “the threat to arrest soldiers and leaders of the only democracy in the Middle East and the only Jewish state in the world was outrageous” and would set a “dangerous precedent”.
