Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Tajikistan had received "exhaustive explanations" about the detention of hundreds of its citizens as a measure to prevent terrorist acts, which is envisaged by Russian legislation.

Peskov said that, at Moscow's initiative, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov contacted his Tajik counterpart, Sirojiddin Mukhriddin, to discuss the mass detentions that have taken place in recent weeks at Moscow's Vnukovo airport.
"The tragic events" that occurred at the end of March in the Crocus City Hall concert hall, on the outskirts of Moscow, "became the main reason for more thorough checks on foreign citizens," explained Peskov, citing a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Similarly, Peskov said that this is a "temporary measure" and that it is not directed at "a specific nation or religion" and that over time the situation at the checkpoints will normalize.
In this regard, the Kremlin spokesman stressed that the parties agreed on the need to continue working on the historical relations between Russia and Tajikistan, as well as preserving and strengthening these positive dynamics.
At the end of March, a 'jihadist' attack took place at the Crocus City Hall that left more than 140 dead. The attack, carried out by suspects of Tajik origin, was claimed by the Afghan branch of the Islamic State (IS).
On Monday, Tajikistan filed a formal complaint against the Russian authorities after more than 950 of its citizens were detained at Moscow's Vnukovo international airport and subjected to controls considered disproportionate.
