"President Biden respects the right to freedom of expression, but protests must be peaceful and lawful. Storming a building is not peaceful, it's wrong. And hate speech and symbols of hate have no place in America," said deputy press secretary Andrew Bates.
Bates also noted that "Biden has spoken out against vile anti-Semitic slurs and violent rhetoric throughout his life," adding that the U.S. leader "condemns the use of the term 'intifada' as well as other hateful and dangerous rhetoric we have seen in recent days."
Columbia University, the epicenter of pro-Palestinian protests in the United States in recent days, is advising members of its community to avoid its main campus in Morningside Heights as protesters remain inside a building, CNN reported.
In the latest escalation of anti-Israel demonstrations over its war with the Islamist group Hamas in Gaza, dozens of protesters occupied a building at Columbia University early Tuesday, barricading entrances and hanging a Palestinian flag from a window.
The demonstrators also set up a barricade outside one of the building's entrances and carried furniture and other objects to create a roadblock.
On social media, the pro-Palestinian demonstrators said they planned to remain in the building until the university meets three demands laid out by the groups behind the action: divestment, financial transparency and amnesty.
Protests have flared at several universities across the United States since Hamas began firing rockets into southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people, the vast majority of them civilians, and wounding some 250 others.
In the ensuing war, Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to the territory's health ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and noncombatants but says at least two-thirds of those killed have been women and children.
