"The enemy attacked Odesa with ballistic missiles. As a result of the attack, three people were killed and three more were injured," Odesa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov wrote on Telegram.

"All necessary medical assistance is being provided to the wounded," Odesa Regional Governor Oleg Kiper wrote on Telegram.

"There is damage to civilian infrastructure," he added, without providing further details.

Ukraine on Tuesday accused Russia of seeking to kill as many civilians as possible after an attack in Odesa involving cluster munitions killed five people and wounded 30, and destroyed a historic building.

The attack, involving an Iskander missile carrying cluster munitions, hit the area around a building known as the "Harry Potter castle" on Monday.

In addition to setting fire to the castle, which is located in the port city's popular Arcadia tourist district and belongs to a university foundation, the cluster munitions damaged other buildings in the area.

"The attack was carried out with an Iskander ballistic missile with cluster munitions in the warhead. This is an indiscriminate weapon," the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office said in a statement, adding that fragments of the missile and metal parts were found within a radius of 1.5 kilometers.

The Prosecutor General's Office added that "there is reason to believe that the decision to use this weapon" in the Russian attack was made in order "to kill as many civilians as possible."

Along with the statement, the prosecutor's office released a video showing the explosions of the multiple submunitions, or bomblets, that give cluster munitions their name.

Cluster munitions are often used to strike multiple targets spread out over a wide area. They are typically employed to hit formations of tanks or infantry and are designed to damage or destroy as many armored vehicles or personnel as possible across a given area.

Russia has been relentlessly pounding Ukrainian cities for months and has been making advances on the eastern front of Ukraine, which is still waiting for weapons promised by the United States to arrive.
