Two Metropolitan Police officers who responded to the terror attack which rocked the capital on Tuesday morning suffered such significant injuries that one nearly lost her hand.

Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said on Wednesday that surgeons spent hours repairing the nerves in the arm of a female officer who suffered “horrific” injuries after she confronted the knifeman who murdered a 14-year-old boy and injured two other civilians near a Tube station in Hainault.

“The arm was very badly damaged and the surgeon spent many, many hours reconstructing it... It’s a horrific, life-changing injury,” he told LBC radio.

But he said the officer is expected to make a full recovery “with a lot of physiotherapy”.

A male inspector also underwent surgery for a serious hand injury but was in “good spirits”.

The commissioner would not confirm whether the officers were armed with Tasers, as has been reported, but he praised the bravery of the officers who “ran towards danger”.

“People talk about police officers running towards danger. What we saw on some of the footage that’s been circulating on social media and news websites is what that actually looks like. We had officers running towards somebody who was armed with a sword,” he said.

He also offered his condolences to the family of the teenage victim and said officers were on scene “within 12 minutes”.

“The first thing I want to say is to the parents who have lost their 14-year-old son, which is just horrific and every parent’s worst nightmare. I am sure everybody’s thoughts are with them,” he said.

The 36-year-old suspect was detained 22 minutes after police were first called to the attack shortly before 7am. Officers are not currently treating the incident as “targeted” and it is “not believed to be terror-related”.
