"The attempt to use the International Criminal Court against Israel, which fights terrorism, poses a clear and present danger to democracies, to free and peace-loving nations that abide by the rules of international law," Isaac Herzog said as he welcomed US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Tel Aviv.

"I call on our allies and friends to stand up and reject such moves," Herzog added.

"Israel has a very robust judicial system" that "prosecutes the highest echelons of this country like any other citizen. We are proud of that," the Israeli head of state said.

Israeli officials told the New York Times that they believe the ICC will issue arrest warrants for members of the government — including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — for charges related to Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip.

According to the US daily, the ICC also intends to indict leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

The United States said Monday it was "not in favor" of an ICC probe into the Gaza war.

On Monday, Netanyahu said that the arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, if issued, would be meant to "harm Israel's leaders and soldiers, essentially to harm Israel's ability to defend itself."

The Israeli prime minister called on "the leaders of the free world" to "roundly condemn this outrageous step."

Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip on July 7 after a Hamas attack on Israeli territory that killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped 240 others.

In the Gaza Strip, more than 34,000 people have died since the beginning of the conflict, according to Hamas, which controls the Palestinian enclave.
