The victim of a fatal sword attack in Hainault, east London, has been named by police as 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, who his family described as a "wonderful child" who was "much loved and cherished".

"This is an incredibly tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of a young boy's life and left his family devastated. I would ask that their privacy is respected at this time," said Detective Chief Inspector Larry Smith, who is leading the investigation.

Anjorin had been a pupil at the private Bancroft's School in Woodford Green since the age of seven, Sky News understands, and the school's flag was flying at half-mast following the incident.

In a statement issued to the broadcaster, Anjorin's family said his "loss has left a huge void". "No family should ever have to go through what we are going through today. Any family will understand that this is an absolute tragedy," it said.

The school also described the teenager as a "true scholar" who showed "commendable dedication to his studies". "His positive nature and gentle character will have a lasting impact on us. The loss of such a young life is something we will always struggle to come to terms with," a statement quoted by the BBC said.

The attack happened on Tuesday morning when the Metropolitan Police were called shortly before 7am to reports of a car having been driven into a house in Thurlow Gardens and people being attacked by a man with a sword.

As well as the fatality, four other people were injured - two members of the public who suffered minor injuries and two police officers who required hospital treatment for stab wounds.

A 36-year-old man remains in custody after being Tasered.
