"Students have the right to go to class and feel safe," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a briefing, adding: "We will continue to underscore that anti-Semitism should be called out."

The spokeswoman said the war in Gaza is a "painful moment" and that "Americans have the right to peacefully protest." But she reiterated that the White House does not consider the occupation of a building by students at New York's Columbia University to be a "peaceful" demonstration.

So far, US President Joe Biden has remained silent on the mobilization of support for the Palestinians in Gaza at many American universities.

The students are calling on their institutions to cut ties with donors and companies linked to Israel and denounce the US government's support for its Israeli ally.

The White House's communication on the subject, while defending freedom of expression, is based primarily on the rejection of anti-Semitism.

Karine Jean-Pierre also announced that Joe Biden will travel to the Capitol, the seat of the US Congress, on May 7 to deliver a speech on the occasion of the day dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust.
