"Tomorrow [Thursday], diplomatic relations with the State of Israel will be severed," declared Petro, the first left-wing president in Colombia's history, in a speech to his supporters in Bogota.

On 20 February, Petro had already accused Israel of committing "genocide" against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, expressing his "total solidarity" with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was plunged into a diplomatic crisis for comparing the Israeli offensive to the Nazi extermination of Jews.
Brazil and Colombia are supporting the historic case brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, for alleged violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention.
Petro then announced the suspension of the purchase of weapons manufactured by Israel, one of the main suppliers to the South American country's security forces, reiterating his claims about the ongoing "genocide" in Gaza, which "brings to mind the Holocaust, even if the world powers do not like to recognise it."
