The U.S. Department of State announced sanctions on more than 80 entities and individuals, including those involved in advancing Russia’s future energy production and export capabilities, evading or undermining sanctions, and supporting Russia’s ability to wage its war against Ukraine.

The State Department also announced that it is submitting a determination to Congress under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 (CBW Act) regarding Russia’s use of the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops.

“In accordance with the CBW Act, the Department is reimposing restrictions on U.S. foreign military financing, U.S. government procurement, and the export of defense articles and defense services to Russia,” the statement reads.

The U.S. government is also sanctioning three Russian government entities associated with Russia’s chemical and biological weapons programs and four Russian companies that have contributed to those entities.

Among these actions, the State Department is also sanctioning three additional individuals connected to the death of Aleksey Navalny at Russian Penal Colony IK-3.

All of the targets are being designated pursuant to an Executive Order “authorizing sanctions for specified harmful foreign activities of the Government of the Russian Federation.”

The State Department said in the statement that the United States “will continue to use the tools at our disposal to disrupt Russia’s military-industrial base and limit Russia’s use of the international financial system to advance its war against Ukraine.”

“We continue to stand with the people of Russia who are fighting for a more democratic future and with the people of Ukraine who are defending their homeland from Russia’s aggression,” the statement continues.
