Josh Kaul’s comments came Wednesday night at a briefing with law enforcement officials about the shooting that sent children running from Mount Horeb High School and prompted hourslong lockdowns at local schools, according to the Associated Press.
Authorities said a gunman who never entered the building “was neutralized” outside the school.
“This incident happened outside (the school). The individual in this case never gained entry,” Kaul said, adding that there were no injuries.
Officials at the briefing described the student as a juvenile male but did not provide his age or any other information about what school he attended.
Kaul declined to answer questions, however, about what happened in the lead-up to the police response, including whether the student fired any shots, what type of weapon he had and whether he tried to enter the school.
Authorities said multiple Mount Horeb officers, who were wearing body cameras, fired their weapons, but they did not specify how many.
Police remained on the scene for hours after the incident, and students were kept in lockdown until late afternoon, when they were released to reunite with their families.
