According to the Associated Press, the situation worsened overnight after several incidents of violence by counterprotesters. In recent days, the protest encampment of hundreds of demonstrators in support of the people of the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, which has been under attack by Israel since Hamas militants launched a rocket barrage on July 8 last year, has grown with more tents. At UCLA, many of the activists supporting Gaza wore helmets and bandannas and some carried makeshift plywood shields in case of clashes with police. A separate group of students holding signs in support of Israel and the "Jewish people" rallied nearby on campus overnight. The counter-demonstration in Los Angeles also continued overnight. At least 15 pro-Palestinian protesters were injured and the police response was criticized as "ineffective" by California politicians. Ray Wiliani, who lives nearby, told the Associated Press that he came to UCLA on Wednesday night to support the pro-Palestinian demonstrators. "Enough is enough. We need to take a stand," the protester said. Meanwhile, police in New Hampshire made arrests and dismantled tents at Dartmouth College, and state troopers in Oregon moved onto the campus of Portland State University as officials sought to end an occupation of the library that began Monday. The nationwide demonstrations began April 17 in solidarity with Palestinians in the wake of Israel's offensive in Gaza. At several other locations around the United States, protest encampments have been dismantled by police, sometimes with arrests, or closed down voluntarily, including at the City College and Fordham University in New York City, the University of Portland in Oregon, and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, as well as Tulane University in New Orleans.
