Authorities began removing barricades and dismantling a tent encampment set up by pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles, on Thursday. Dozens of arrests were made. Hundreds of demonstrators refused to leave the site despite police orders, following clashes that erupted when pro-Israel protesters tried to tear down a line of fencing and pallets set up by the pro-Palestinian group. As officers advanced, firing stun grenades, protesters used umbrellas as shields and alerted each other to have water ready in case police deployed tear gas or other irritants, the Associated Press reported. Several explosions were heard at the scene, according to NBC News. Some of the protesters knelt on the ground with their hands zip-tied behind their backs as officers in riot gear, helmets, gas masks and arm bands detained them and led them away from the campus in lines, toward waiting buses.

At least 15 pro-Palestinian protesters were injured in the early morning clashes, which led to classes being canceled. The police response, which some critics called “heavy-handed,” drew criticism from California political leaders including Gov. Gavin Newsom. Police in New Hampshire, meanwhile, made arrests and dismantled tents at Dartmouth College, while officers in Oregon entered the campus of Portland State University as officials sought to end an occupation of the school’s library that began Monday. The nationwide demonstrations began April 17 at Columbia University in protest of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. Several other protest encampments around the U.S. have been cleared by police, resulting in arrests, or have been taken down voluntarily, including at the City College of New York, Fordham University in New York City, the University of Portland in Oregon and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, as well as Tulane University in New Orleans.
