Hamas said in a statement that Haniyeh discussed the issue in a phone call with Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel.
Haniyeh told Kamel that Hamas negotiators would return to Egypt "as soon as possible" to finalize the ongoing talks, the statement said, according to Agence France-Presse.
The Palestinian militant group has yet to respond to the truce proposal under discussion, casting doubt on a possible deal after nearly seven months of war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Israel had given Hamas until Wednesday night to respond to the proposal before deciding whether to send its own negotiators to Egypt.
The talks aim to halt a war in Gaza sparked by an unprecedented Hamas ground attack on Israel on October 7, which has left nearly 1,200 Palestinians dead and two Israelis captive, according to Israel.
Israel has since been waging an offensive in Gaza that has killed about 34,600 Palestinians and destroyed much of the territory's infrastructure, according to figures released Tuesday by the Hamas-run government.
