As part of a global day of action by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Amnesty International released its petition with the support of more than 250 humanitarian and human rights associations, weapons experts, activists, journalists and academics.
For Amnesty International's section director Erika Guevara Rosas, this demand should serve as a warning to those who continue to send weapons to the parties involved in the conflict.
"The countries run the risk of being complicit in war crimes and other violations of international law," warned the organization, which highlighted the possibility that they are violating the United Nations Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
In its annual report in late April of this year, Amnesty International had already denounced that powerful nations - among which it cited the United States and many Western European countries -- were supporting Israel's military offensive against the civilian population in Gaza.
In that report, on the United States in particular, Amnesty International said that Washington continued to supply weapons "with which flagrant human rights violations were committed".
Through this initiative, Amnesty International aims to raise awareness among the population and governments about the impact that arms shipments can have on the defense of human rights.
Also to this end, the organization's activists propose various awareness campaigns, ranging from demonstrations to projections of images on government buildings.
