"These attacks on aid shipments are unacceptable and Israel must take steps to prevent them and hold those responsible accountable,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters Thursday.

Miller said the same message was delivered in Jerusalem Wednesday by Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The incident in question occurred several days ago, when a group of settlers attacked an aid convoy from Jordan that was headed to the recently reopened Erez crossing.

The trucks were carrying flour, food and other humanitarian supplies.

Miller welcomed the arrest of three suspects in the attack.

"That is the right step. That is the kind of step that should always be taken when there are attacks on aid convoys, and even better, there should be steps taken to prevent those attacks in the first place,” he said.

The State Department spokesman also called on the Palestinian militant group Hamas to respect aid deliveries coordinated by humanitarian organizations. According to Washington, the shipment was seized by militants after it entered Gaza.

The shipment was eventually returned to U.N. officials.

"If there is anything that Hamas can do to jeopardize the aid shipment, it is to divert it for their own use rather than allowing it to go to innocent civilians in need, so they should certainly refrain from doing that in the future,” he said.

Miller noted that this was the first time Hamas had seized a shipment.
