Mundo Maddie McCann

It's been 17 years since Madeleine McCann went missing from Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, where she was on holiday with her family.

"It's hard to say this number without shaking our heads in disbelief", the girl's parents wrote today - to show that, despite the many years that have passed, Maddie is not forgotten.

"Although we are fortunate in many ways and are able to live a relatively normal and happy life now, 'living in limbo' continues to be very unsettling. And the absence still hurts", they continue.

Gerald and Kate McCann have never lost hope of finding their daughter and have done everything they can to ensure that the case is not forgotten. After another year, both admit that the "desire to find you, even after so many years, still remains and we are grateful for that".

Maddie disappeared on May 3, 2007. The parents left the girl and her two siblings Sean and Amelie sleeping while they dined at a bar a few meters away. When Kate returned to the room, Maddie was not in her bed. To this day, no one knows her whereabouts.

Christian Brueckner, a German who was in Praia da Luz at the time of the disappearance, remains the only suspect in the crime.
