The Associated Press says several students have set up camps on Australian campuses in major cities over the past two weeks to protest Israel’s offensive in Gaza and demand their universities cut academic ties with Israel, including research partnerships with weapons manufacturers.

Also on Thursday, a counter-rally in support of Israel was held at the University of Sydney, Australia’s oldest university.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, there were some minor scuffles between the groups, but supporters on both sides were kept apart by a heavy police presence.

Meanwhile, pro-Palestinian protests over Israel’s military action in Gaza spread to more French universities on Thursday night, the Spanish news agency EFE reported.

In Paris, several dozen students occupied part of the prestigious Institute of Political Studies after a vote at a general assembly, prompting the school’s administration to warn staff that it would close several buildings on the central Rue Saint-Guillaume and ask them to work from home.

Six students announced they were starting a hunger strike.

In Lyon, eastern France, about 100 young people occupied the lecture hall of the city’s Institute of Political Studies after a vote at an assembly.

After an electoral meeting in nearby Vénissieux, Mathilde Panot, the parliamentary group president of the left-wing France Unbowed (LFI) party, and Rima Hassan, a Franco-Palestinian lawyer who is the party’s candidate for the European elections, went to the university to express their support for the protesters.

There were also reports of occupations at the journalism school in Lille, northern France, and a planned demonstration at the University of Grenoble campus in southeastern France.

French Equality and Anti-Discrimination Secretary of State Aurorte Bergé on Thursday deplored the fact that some pro-Palestinian students were making a gesture with their hands painted red, a reference to the lynching of two Israelis in Ramallah, in the West Bank, in 2000.
