The director-general of the German public broadcaster, Peter Limbourg, justified the decision by "the unwavering courage, conviction and strength" with which Navalnaya "fights for a free Russia and stands up for those whom [Russian President] Vladimir Putin wants to silence".

"Yulia Navalnaya has supported her husband's political work in the fight for freedom of the press and freedom of expression from the very beginning, despite all the risks, constant threats and personal restrictions," he stressed.

Navalnaya will receive the award on 5 June in Berlin, at a ceremony where German Finance Minister and leader of the liberal party Christian Lindner will speak.

The DW statement recalls that Navalny died in February in a Russian prison in circumstances that are still unclear and that Western governments and several international organizations have accused the Russian authorities of being behind the events.

DW began awarding the Freedom of Speech Award in 2015 with the aim of "honoring the exceptional work of journalists and human rights defenders" and "highlighting restrictions on freedom of the press worldwide".

In 2023, the winner was the editor-in-chief of the Salvadoran newspaper El Faro, Óscar Martínez, while in 2022 it went to Ukrainian war reporters Evgueni Maloletka and Mstislav Chernov, authors of the documentary '20 Days in Mariupol'.
