France estimates 150,000 Russian soldiers killed in the war in Ukraine

Around 150,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, according to estimates released by French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné in an interview published today.

"The Russian military failure is already there. We estimate Russian military losses at 500,000, including 150,000 dead," Séjourné told the European edition of the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta

"Why all this? It can be summed up in two words: for nothing," he added, according to the French news agency AFP.

The French estimate of the Russian death toll is slightly lower than that given by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in February, when he said that 180,000 Russian soldiers had died in the year of war.

In late April, the United Kingdom estimated that around 450,000 Russians had been killed or injured in Ukraine.

Russia does not release any information on the number of dead and wounded among its troops.

The Ukrainian army also does not release casualty figures, but Zelensky admitted the deaths of 31,000 soldiers in February, when marking the first anniversary of the war.

Ukrainian forces have been on the defensive since their failed counteroffensive last summer.

Russia has the initiative against an adversary that is struggling to recruit new soldiers and is facing delays in Western aid.

After months of Republican blocking, the United States finally approved a $61 billion (€56.7 billion at current exchange rates) aid package for Ukraine in late April.

The resumption of US military assistance should allow Kyiv to consolidate its forces and try to stabilize the front, especially in the east, in the areas of Chasiv Yar and Avdiivka.

Ukraine's difficulties are compounded by its lack of air defenses, which has allowed the Russians to bombard critical infrastructure, particularly the electricity grid and railway lines.

Some military analysts believe that Russia could be preparing to launch a new major offensive in Ukraine.
