The death toll has risen to 22 after 22 more deaths were confirmed in the last 24 hours, the ministry said in a statement carried by local media, according to Spain's EFE news agency.

The number of injured and missing people remained at 125 and 90 respectively, and a total of 196,000 people have been affected by the flooding across the country.

Torrential rains, exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon, have caused widespread flooding in the East African nation, destroying roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

In the deadliest incident of the bad weather, dozens of people died on Sunday night when a natural dam in the centre of the country burst under the weight of accumulated rainwater.

According to the interior ministry, 52 bodies have been recovered and 51 people are still missing near Mai Mahiu in the Rift Valley, some 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the capital, Nairobi.

Separately, around 100 tourists were stranded on Wednesday when a river burst its banks in the popular Masai Mara national reserve following heavy rains.

The tourism ministry said rescue teams had evacuated 90 people from the reserve, where 19 lodges were flooded.

Amid the unfolding disaster in Kenya, Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Thursday criticised the Kenyan government, accusing it of failing to act in a timely manner and respond adequately to the devastating floods.

Several other countries in East Africa are also battling the effects of seasonal rains that have been turbocharged by El Niño. In Tanzania, at least 155 people have died in floods or landslides.

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon often associated with global warming, which brings drought to some parts of the world and heavy rains to others.
