Niamey, May 03, 2024 (Lusa) - A military base on the outskirts of Niger's capital, Niamey, that has hosted US forces is now also occupied by Russian troops, the US defense secretary admitted, denying that this poses a problem.

The cohabitation is evidence of Niger's political reconfiguration since a July 2023 coup that ousted then-President Mohamed Bazoum. The new junta has sought a rapprochement with Moscow, including asking for the departure of US troops, which Washington has accepted.

However, while that request is being worked out, Air Base 101, next to Niamey's international airport, is hosting both US and Russian soldiers.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, speaking to reporters on Thursday after meeting with his counterparts from Australia, the Philippines and Japan, said "the Russians are in a separate compound, with no access to US forces or equipment."

He therefore did not see a "significant problem" in terms of protecting US troops.

Niger's military junta confirmed in April that talks with the US on troop withdrawal were underway, with the aim of establishing a timetable as soon as possible. Niger's Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine recently travelled to Washington in a bid to advance the dialogue.

The US suspended most cooperation, including military, with Niger after the coup.

In March, Niger denounced the military cooperation agreement signed with the US in 2012, claiming it had been "unilaterally imposed" by Washington.

The 1,000 or so US troops in Niger are involved in the fight against Islamist extremism in the Sahel region and have a major drone base in Agadez, in the north.

In mid-January, Russia announced that it had agreed to "intensify" military cooperation with Niger.
